Brand Spotlight : Marpesia & Co. and Pregnancy Necklaces

Ladies today I’d like to introduce you to Martina Guillaumier, a dear friend of mine and an amazing jewellery designer. Whilst all her jewellery is stunning, she creates something I’ve never encountered before – pregnancy necklaces.

I decided this was extremely interesting and I therefore thought an interview regarding the entire matter was in order !!

Tell me a bit about yourself and your store Marpesia and Co
My name’s Martina, I’m 29 years old, and if there’s one thing I’ve always been, that’s creative. I always found the fact that I could never lose myself in writing or drawing so frustrating. So when I decided to start making jewellery I was ecstatic to find that not only was I good at it, but I also retreated into my own little world like I do when I’m reading. As I got more confident I started developing new styles and learning new techniques so that my jewellery could appeal to a wider range of people, going from huge statement pieces to very delicate and simple items.
The name “Marpesia & Co.” comes from the fact that I’m pretty tall, so I’ve been called an Amazon a few times. I thought it would be fun to pick the name of one of the greatest Amazon queens “Marpesia”, which has a Marin it anyway! The “& Co.” part refers to all the amazing and strong women who have made history. So it’s passing jewellery named after wonderful women onto other wonderful women.
How long have you been making jewellery for ?
I started making jewellery in 2009. I worked on a couple of films and fell in love with the whole world, and needed something to keep me going between projects as it’s hard for movies to offer a full time job. It took time before I felt confident enough to start selling. I launched my online ship on the 14th April 2012. Having an online shop takes hours of work (it’s not just about making things) but I’m happy to be doing something creative that I love!
When and how did you get inspired to start making pregnancy necklaces ?
A friend of mine, who I hadn’t seen since finishing University in 2004, messaged me on facebook a couple of weeks after I had launched my shop and facebook page asking me whether I made pregnancy necklaces. I had absolutely no clue what she was talking about. After a Google search I figured that I LOVED the idea, but hated how the designs that I found were so plain! So I decided to develop my own version. They had to be something easy to wear, light and durable, but also very pretty because they are, after all, a kind of first gift for you baby.
Tell me more about these necklaces
There’s something magical about pregnancy necklaces. This is an old Mexican tradition in which mothers-to-be wear a ball chime hanging on the end of a string or chain around their belly button. As she goes about her daily routine, the pendant rolls over the mother’s belly and produces a soft musical sound. The sounds brings comfort to the baby and, after the baby is born, the sound is reminiscent of the comfort of the womb. I love the idea that they can be passed on to the child when he or she grows up. Or else the necklace could be turned into a shorter necklace which can be worn as a memory of the pregnancy…which is why them being super pretty helps!
How would one go about ordering one of these ? Are the custom made or pre-designed ?
Both! I have a couple available in my shop at the moment. One is completely white and one has hints of blue in it (if you love blue or if it’s a boy), but I’m happy to use a different stone or colour! There is a 3 week waiting period for custom made pregnancy necklaces, but I’m more than happy to make them! This is a very personal necklace, so I understand that someone would want to help create it. I’m even happy to add little charms like initials (of sibling or parents, for example) or hearts. I’ll need a day to calculate cost depending on materials and the amount of time the necklace will take to make.
Check out the pics below for examples of this stunning work of art:
67.33 euros
71.67 euros
