Brand Spotlight : Sammy Tailor Made Clothing

I recently had the good fortune to come across Samantha’s stall at Patches Market and I was wowed by her designs and excellent craftsmanship – I had actually seen some of her stuff before, at Malta Fashion Week and I remember loving the designs but seeing them up close and personal made a difference and I walked away from her stall with a black and white blazer that fits like a glove and looks like a dream.

After meeting Samantha I decided to interview her and learn more about her and her wonderful designs.
Meet Samantha Muscat the 22 year-old Maltese fashion behind Sammy Tailor Made Clothing.

When did you first get interested in designing clothes ?
I have always been interested in fashion, and designing was always something I wanted to do. I used to wonder how clothes were made, so decided to do something about it.
Do you also tailor the clothes yourself or do you work with tailors and seamstresses?

I do everything myself.
When did you first make your first steps into this world ? What were your first impressions ?

I started sewing lessons three years age and I immediately knew that this was what I wanted to do. I worked very hard, even taking extra lessons. I learnt how to make different items of clothing starting from the simplest skirt to the most elaborate items. These extra lessons gave me the skill and confidence to start creating my own clothes. I used to make things for myself and my sister and was extremely encouraged by the positive feedback I received. My friends quickly started asking me to make thinks for them, so I did, and word got round. It was in the 8th edition of Patches that I really found my niche, though. I could say that it was a huge stepping stone for me and I have never looked back since then. That is something I will never for get. At Patches I felt incredible. It was everything I had ever dreamed of. People kept coming to my stall and the satisfaction was instant. Everyone was helpful and complimentative, so I could say my first impressions were very positive. I met a lot of talented people there who have inspired me to cary on doing this.
When did you actually start selling ? And where can one buy your pieces ?

As I already mentioned, I started selling my clothes at Patches. I then created a facebook page, where people can order online or directly from me.
Do you have different collections ?

Only one so far. I made a glam-chic collection for Mercedes Fashion Week which I called ‘The Black and White Collection’.
It was different from anything else that I had made, as the style was far from my usual Bohemian Chic. After displaying this collection at the Mercedes Fashion Week, I also asked to present it at the Laura Pausini concert. I have sold quite a few items from this collection and it is perhaps this collection that gave me the recognition I wanted.

Which is your all time favourite piece that you have created ?

A particular piece from The Black and White Collection is my absolute favourite. The dress, is half black and half white with a diamond cutout on the back, and elaborate sleeves. The dress took quite some time to make, yet it was worth it and to be honest, I don’t want to part with it.

From where do you draw on for inspiration and which designers inspire you most ?

I don’t have any particular favourite designers. I get inspiration from clothes that I like, whether on TV, websites or magazines. I also like to draw on music for inspiration. It puts me in the mood and strongly influences my designes.

Your best career moment ?

Definitely Mercedes Fashion Week. It was my first big show, and first is always the best, in my opinion. A lot of people came to see me and my Black and White collection was received very positively. It was a dream come true.
What can we look forward to for 2013?

I am going to keep working hard. I am planning a photoshoot for men’s collection I am working on, but other that, I will be sewing and coming up with new ideas.
Absolutely love her stuff and will be watching her closely:) …..here are some more pics of her stuff from her fb page …
