Trouser Suit – Pant Suit – which one to use ?? …well I guess it depends which side of the world you happen to live in..I happen to enjoy the term Pant Suit more so I’ve decided I’m sticking with that one 🙂 I was watching the latest Gossip Girl episode last night and I couldn’t believe that Blair was wearing this pant suit…totally out of character for her, I don’t think we’ve actually ever seen Blair in trousers let alone a pant suit, this outfit has been slammed on some fashion blogs but I’m going out on a limb and saying I think it is totally fantastic!! – the pant suit is by Fendi and the blouse is by Gucci.
Pant suits had their moment of fame in the 70s & 80s when many women enjoyed wearing them for the power they felt it gave them, but over they ears the pant suit went out of favour and was seen as something reserved for the boardroom, definitely not something to wear on a Saturday night. The last century has been all about femininity with chiffon wisps and kitten heels and lots of lace. Hints of power and masculinity have returned in the last 5 years with structured shoulders having made a huge comeback and last Winter trousers were very much in trend again.
This year the pant suits have returned and seem to have completely gotten back their popularity. The A/W 2012 catwalks were full of different playful offerings with brocade material, jewelled trousers and crazy Brady-bunch-style prints. Dresses and skirts are still around of course but the discarded pant suit is back with a bang!!
Miuccia Prada , the person synonymous with a midi skirt had a complete trouser revolution and besides populating her collections with 90% trousers also donned a pant suit herself for the show.
On the catwalk Prada’s trouser version were a straight cut (not skinny) that hit right at that point above the ankle. The styles ranged from black wool and a mix of geometric prints.
Miu Miu’s version came in supersized patterns and jewelled versions. These seem to be more masculine, than their Prada sibling, cut wider down the knee but also hitting right at the ankle
Stella McCartney’s cobalt blue brocade version is a beautiful take on the style whilst Helmut Lang presented the all-white version.
Burberry’s chic mix of heritage and velvet is absolutely beautiful and evokes tones of British Aristocracy. The trousers here are slightly slouchy with a tapered cropped leg that hits above the ankle
Louis Vuitton presented classy, glamorous versions, that seem to be made of expensive carpets or tapestry prints – aristocracy anyone ? The trouser style here is similar to that of Prada with a straight leg hitting right at the ankle, the jackets are a-line.
Check out how these styles have been adopted by the general public and celebrities

How to wear it ?
This look is of course not for everyone and especially the versions with cropped slim trousers tend to favour tall thin legs much more than wide short ones.
It can look really elegant when done right and is great for those girls with apple shaped bodies – a well tailored jacket can hide a multitude of sins around the middle.
Pear shaped women wanting to adopt this look might want to go for jackets with a longer length and a-line style, this will conceal the part of their body where pears tend to store most fat. However, ensure that the jacket still cinches in at the waist as you don’t want to lose your best feature. Wider trousers will also look better and wear with high heels.
Those women with broad shoulders should choose jackets without lots of padding and go for trousers that are wide at the bottom to balance out the shoulders.
