Events Post : Maltese Jewellery Exhibition

Ever since I heard about the upcoming Fondazzjoni Patrimonju Malti’s exhibition Vanity, Profanity & Worship: Jewellery from the Maltese Islands I’ve been waiting eagerly for it’s arrival and it’s finally here !!!

For the first time in Malta, this exhibition will bring together spectacular pieces of jewellery loaned from Maltese private and church collections which rarely, if ever, are seen in public……Over five hundred jewellery items are being exhibited, and this will provide a thorough survey of what jewellery in Malta looked like from ancient times to the present…….Jewellery sheds light on the beliefs, customs and fashions of a people and this exhibition will highlight all these aspects.
The exhibition will run from the 31st March-26th May at Casino Maltese Valletta and will be open every day from 10am – 6pm and until late on Friday.

Over the past few years, there has been an alarming increase in the idea of Maltese people selling their ‘old gold’  to jewellers by the weight. Often these pieces are melted down and reworked into modern pieces; when this happens a work of art has been lost. Maltese jewellery, especially antique jewellery is renowned for its beautiful craftsmanship and its main value is in that rather than in the weight of gold. Plus in a world that goes crazy for anything vintage, melting antique jewellery seems completely mad.
Hopefully, such an exhibition can bring awareness to people that their old jewellery is beautiful and still has it’s place in the modern world.
Check back once the exhibition has opened for a review !!
