Brand Spotlight – Interview with Sunita Mukhi Label – Handbags with a Difference

*UPDATE Sunita Mukhi has become quite an established handbag designer and in fact at LFW I spotted quite a few people carrying that evil eye

As you recall, prior to the ‘New Designers’ Fashion Show in Malta Fashion Week, I interviewed each local new designer about their work and collection. On the day of the show, I realised that somehow upcoming bag designer Sunita Mukhi had not been on my list of designers and this was indeed a shame, since her bag designs are just awesome !!

Of course I could not let the opportunity to interview her pass me by so here it is:

When did you first start to get interested in fashion design and in a particular bags?
I’ve always been interested in fashion and design but have definitely been shaped by my changing environments  I grew up in Malta and my family owned a textile store – the beautiful fabrics and colours remain a huge inspiration for me.
I specifically wanted to make handbags in particular because I believe are a really important part of a women’s attire. Handbags carry personality externally and our most precious possessions internally.
When did you actually start?
I started my first collection in 2011.But my website and latest collection are launching May 2013 www.SuntiaMukhi.com
Tell us something about the collection your eye of osiris collection?
The evil eye symbol is very dear to my heart, the symbol is representative of so many things for so many people. For me, it’s relative to my early days in Malta. The fishermen attach the Luzzu (evil eye symbol) to their boats for luck and protection while out at sea.  Now that this specific collection has been created I’ve been overwhelmed with the response from people – even Anna Dello Russo has one!
Any photos from any previous work/collections?

Which is your all-time favourite piece that you have created?
I would say the evil eye shaped clutch is my favourite.

From where do you draw on for inspiration and are there are any other designers that inspire you?
My inspiration is drawn by my surroundings, and from my travels. I’ve lived in many countries that are hugely influential in my design process such as West Africa and Mombai, very colourful and lively places.

In terms of designers, I find it difficult to place my designs so closely to another designer’s work. Though, when it comes to ethos and brand aesthetic designers such as Chanel, Herve Leger and Oscar De La Renta really stick out in my mind. All three brands are synonymous with classic, timeless beauty.

I am totally into these bags, so bright and colourful and of such lovely workmanship! You can find more of Sunita Mukhi on her facebook page and her website
