Brand Spotlight – Model Gaby Curmi

In the run up to Malta Fashion Awards on the 11th May we are shining the spotlight on different nominees and past winners. Today we shine the spotlight on Gaby Curmi (supernovamodel.com.mt) – I’ve worked on a number of shoots with Gaby and I think she is an excellent model who gives each shoot her all and is able to think outside the box and be versatile.
I was very happy to see that she was nominated in both the Female Model and Female Catwalk Model categories as I think both nominations are well deserved.
Check out her interview below:

So, Who is Gaby Curmi ?
A freakishly tall girl with curly hair haha. That’s what I used to think of myself when I was younger. Joking apart, Gaby Curmi is a bubbly, outgoing, organized and giving girl, who likes to put the people she cares for before her. My hobbies are mostly modelling, shopping, dancing, and socializing with my friends. I’m quite a straight forward person and I try my utmost to always look at the positive in any given situation in life…. even though sometimes it’s tough!
When did your interest in modelling first begin?
I remember when I was around 16 years old my friend bought a Nikon and asked to take some photos of me in her garden. She told me immediately that I should consider modelling and after seeing the shots I did some digging around and became interested in Malta’s fashion industry. I went to various casting and got turned down, got signed with an agency and received a lot of criticism resulting in me leaving that agency, and due to this I was about to give up on what I thought could be a thing I was good at. Until an opportunity came up…
What inspires you? Is there anyone or anything that you feel has influenced your modeling style?
On a photoshoot or even on the catwalk, when you wear the designer’s clothes, have your hair and make-up done, you automatically get the vibe to be the best model out there. That’s insipartion in itself. However, if I had to chose one person who influences my modeling style it has to be Tyra Banks. Not only is she an amazing model with stunning features, but she has also managed to make a name for herself in the TV industry with her hit show ‘America’s Next Top Model’ resulting in her becoming a top end entrepreneur. When I am doing a shoot I always keep in mind words Tyra Banks came up with such as ‘smizing’ meaning smiling with your eyes and ‘booty touch’ meaning when you arch your back and slightly pump up your booty.

What has been your proudest career moment?
As mentioned earlier, I was about to give up on modelling until I read on fb that there was a competition carried out by Supernova and the winner was told to go and model in England at Clothes Show Live Birmingham. The thought of simply getting chosen was already exciting and a step forward from not giving up, but as soon as the presenter announced the winner on the final night of the competition and it was number 8 (my number) I simply coloudn’t believe it. I litrally had tears comin down my cheeks, because I wasn’t expecting to win…. the overall expirience was so amazing and I met so many people on the way that that was enough for me. So yes…. winning Supernova Model the competition and modelling abroad was two of my proudest moments in my career.
Describe the best/favourite photo you have ever modelled for?
That’s a difficult one, because every shoot is different and for some reason I always end up loving the outcome of the photos. It has to be between two photoshoots. My first favourite is a shot taken by Kurt Paris for last years Malta Fashion Week exhibition were I had a mask on my face and was like a ghost roaming the streets of Mdina(Malta)…stylish as ever obviously! my own styling work !!

The other is a Bernard Polidano shoot where I was wearing a bikini acting all sexy (or at least trying to haha). That shoot was something I never did before. I never had to act seductive for a photo and at first doubted myself if I could, but modelling is all about being versatile so I went infront of the camera and imagined the guy I was crushing on behind the lens ( sorry Bernard! Haha).(pic below)
You are predominantly a fashion model – would you call yourself a fashionista is real life? How would you describe your style?
Oh yes I’m a total fashionista!! I love fashion!! It’s literally a part of me!! Defining my style though is quite a challenge. I enjoy wearing cute short dresses , skirts and shirts with blazers during the day but I also don’t mind putting on some comfy jeans, trainers and a hoodie or simply a t-shirt for a relaxed night out. One of the trends I like to follow in Summer is the Bohemian trend wearing loads of maxi dresses with gladiator sandals and cute denim jackets with loads of chunky accessories; accessories are always a MUST! Even if it’s just a pair of stud earrings or a handful of rings and bracelets……I Simply love them and can’t get enough!
Do you have a few images you can share with us?
My two favourite shoots mentioned above.
Plans for 2013?
I’m currently focusing on my exams abroad but when I’m back in Malta I hope that I will have opportunities to continue pursuing my modelling career as it is something I truly love doing. I also wish to save up and do a lot of travelling but I doubt thats going to happen with all the shopping I am doing here in the UK.
