Brand Spotlight : LA ROSSA – Original Designer Headpieces

Rosanne Spiteri Stafrace is most definitely not a newcomer to the Maltese fashion industry, she has been creating original hats and headpieces for many a year now. With an abundance of love for fashion that began from when she was still a young girl, Rosanne has pure talent, passion and an abundance of skills, all of these enabling her to create one uniquely fantastic piece after piece.
I first met Rosanne at a fashion event, what struck me most was her energy, when she spoke about her work it was as though a fire had been lit, there was so much she had to say and wanted to say. I love meeting people who are passionate about their work, to me it makes all the difference between someone who just does a job and someone who excels at their job. Needless to say, I immediately sought to find out more about Rosanne and her work.
I planned on interviewing her a while ago actually, but for various reasons, it took a while for it to happen. As they say better late then never..and ladies and gents I present to you

When did you first start to get interested in fashion design and in particular hats?

For as long as I remember, fashion and art have always fascinated me. Following my mother’s footsteps came so naturally to me, as she was a dress designer and made hats. At a very young age , I designed and sewed clothes for my dolls, but by the time I was in my teens, the art of hat making stole more of my attention. But I also started showing more interest in painting.

When did you actually start?
At the age of 16, I was designing and sewing my own clothes, and painting on the fabric. Then, I moved to making hats, and also painting on them to match outfits.

Have you ever produced whole collections?
After some years of further experimenting and research, I decided to prepare my first collection when I was in my mid-twenties. So, my collection was made up of exclusive outfits, with matching shoes, clutch bags, and of course hats…..all hand-painted on.  Eventually, I let go of dress design and painting to dedicate my time completely to hats… which I prefer to call head-pieces, since they’re far from the conservative hat!

In 2005, I prepared a collection of head-pieces to compliment Mugi’s “Black and White Collection” for the Malta Fashion Awards. In 2010 Malta Fashion Awards, I presented my own collection of just head-pieces. And the following year, I teamed with Fersani and prepared a collection to compliment her outfits.
Any photos from any previous work/collections that you can share with us?

Which is your all-time favourite piece that you have created?
It is very difficult for me to pick a favourite, as I vary style according to the personality of who’s wearing it, so I have quite a few favourites in completely different styles.

From where do you draw on for inspiration and are there are any other designers that inspire you?
I’m very observant and imaginative, so I can easily picture the client I’m working on with a final global look, once I know what her outfit looks like. Her personality, together with her appearance are what actually inspire me most. If I had to mention a favourite milliner, I’d say most of Philip Treacy’s designs are very much my style.
