Travel : Amalfi Coast – My Top 5

I’m quite a travel junkie, no sooner have I returned from one trip, I’m already planning and looking into possibilities of another. I love planning my trips, researching, and exploring new places and cultures. As you may know from previous blog posts and possibly a few-too-many Instagram pics, I just returned from exploring the Amalfi Coast. I based myself in Positano, which in my opinion is the most beautiful town along the coast but there’s much more to discover and here’s my top 5 below.

DRIVE. If the idea of driving in Italy along windy, mountainous roads doesn’t scare you, then rent a car, it’s really great to have your own air-conditioned car to hop into that can take you from place to place. It also means you can store swimming necessities and randomly decide to park yourself at one of the numerous, beautiful beaches you’ll come across.

FOOD

  • SEAFOOD: This is seafood that’s insanely fresh, it feels like it’s just been caught. It’s also cooked to perfection and priced at reasonable price points. Some of my favourite meals were at Marina Grande (Amalfi – Degustation Menu made up of 8 courses), Hostaria di Bacco (seafood antipasti platter – those anchovies!), Barilotto del Nonno (pic below – spaghetti vongole and grilled prawns – yumm). Some of these restaurants have beautiful terraces that resemble pretty, little gardens.

  • LEMONS: The lemons that grow on the Amalfi coast are different to other lemons, They’re larger and less bitter than the ones generally found in other countries. As a result, they’re used to make insanely good lemon granita, limoncello that tastes divine and even spaghetti
LACE & LINEN: Most regions in Italy have some form of beautiful fashion speciality. Along the Amalfian coastal towns, the speciality is artisan pieces made from high-quality lace and linen. Think lots and lots of beautiful shirts, scarves and dresses.
VIEWS: There are some truly stunning views to be found all along the Amalfi Coast, Ravello is the highest town, so therefore the best views – they stretch all along the coast. Whilst there do visit the exquisite villas and their beautiful gardens. Be sure to look out for the details.

POMPEII: Not really on the Amalfi Cost but only 45 minutes away. Pompeii is breathtaking, the sheer scale of this once lost and ruined city, the houses that are still sort of there so you can really imagine what it was once like. Visiting Pompeii is truly something not to be missed. If it’s summer, avoid the hottest hours of the day and remember to wear good, closed shoes – there’s a lot of walking on uneven flooring and there’s barely any shade anywhere. That’s a pic of me tired out after three hours at Pompeii.
