Most requests I get are for advice on what to wear to weddings – It seems a lot of us are confused and who can blame us ? What with morning weddings, afternoon weddings, evening weddings, summer/winter…and all the rules of etiquette(some made up, some real) – making head or tail of the whole thing can get a bit confusing – so I decided I’m starting a series of posts on outfit ideas for the different types of weddings.
Last post focused on Afternoon Weddings. Today I’m going to focus on Morning Weddings. In this post (Part 1) I am not going to touch on the subject of hats and fascinators; reason being that whether or not you should wear a hat, the majority of people prefer not to, so I’ll leave that subject for Part 2 so as not to bother those that hate them.
So, What To Wear ?
For a Spring/Summer morning wedding, I tend to favour neutral colours, beige, brown, camel… obviously white is a big no no – this is the bride’s colour. I would avoid head-to-toe black as I feel this doesn’t really work well at a morning wedding. Pastel colours look really nice but I would avoid head-toe pastel, injecting a richer hue somewhere in the outfit will make it more striking. Patterns can also be used and can really add some oopmh to the look.
As far as length of dresses go, I prefer shorter/mid-length dresses for this type of wedding rather than long ones but there a some long ones that work well, it depends on the colour and style, avoid a long dress with embellishment.
Here is an outfit that I created that would be perfect for such a wedding (target age demographic is approx 20+). This dress is suitable for most body shapes except women with very large busts due to the high neckline. It is the perfect dress for a pear shaped body but should suit most small apples too. It will also suit those women with broader shoulders as the fuller skirt will balance out the shoulder proportions.
And here is another outfit (target age demographic is approx 37+). This pink dress is suitable for most body shapes even large busts. It will flatter both apples and pears as it enhances the waist but still skims over the hips.
Last but not least – another great idea for a morning wedding is the skirt suit. I tend to leave this style for women approx over 30+ in skirt suits as this style can seem a bit ageing on a younger woman. I generally prefer skirt suits on apple shaped bodies rather than pear shaped, I end up styling pears in a-line dresses most times as they tend to look more elegant and also a well-cut dress can really enhance their figure.
