Designer Spotlight : William Wilde

William Wilde http://williamwilde.com/home.html is a designer with a difference, his main focus is on exquisite latex and rubber clothes and he is best known for designing the rubber outfit in Rihanna’s video S&M.
William Wilde is heading to Malta next weekend in order to participate in Runway Malta http://www.runwaymalta.com/ on the 10th March.

Bearing in mind that this designer tends to veer away from the norm, I was very interested to gain some insight and I was lucky enough to be able to interview him prior his arrival.

Check it out below:

When did your love affair with fashion and costumes begin ?
Most of my first memories are of obsessing over women’s clothing, jewellery and shoes! I loved drawing and period costume as a child and was desperate to learn how to make clothes when I was about 5, it started pretty young!
How were your early ideas with latex and PVC greeted by your friends and peers ?
For whatever reason I’ve always instinctively loved clothing that is striking, theatrical and suggestive, no one was surprised..!
What was the defining moment of your career ?
Well I think so far it has to be the launch of my own label. It was in the pipeline for a good while and I couldn’t be happier now that it’s picking up momentum, I still have so much more that I want to achieve!!
How do you envision the typical ‘William Wilde’ woman ?
I think/hope my clothes immediately conjure up the world of themes that they are drawn upon, and the people that love it, get it.. They are my people! I’d like to think my clothing is confident, distinguished and glamorous, perhaps this also describes a William Wilde woman!
Where or what do you turn to for inspiration?
Women in music, film, art, literature, history and around me every day inspire me constantly… Concepts for collections occur to me all the time, inspired by the smallest or most obvious of things, I don’t think I’ll ever run out of inspiration, maybe just time!
A word to all our Maltese readers ?
Hello Malta! “I’m ready for my close-up”
Looking forward to seeing his collection next Saturday !!!
