Brand Spotlight : Malta Fashion Week New Designer – Jeff Francalanza

Next Wednesday the 8th of May, the New Designers Fashion Show will take place at Xara Lodge Malta. It is one of the events I am most looking forward to, for a number of reasons, first and foremost it is always an excellent showcase of our local fashion talent, it is truly a delight to watch the numbers of designers participating and the quality of what they produce  go up year after year. This year, I have another reason to be excited for the show, I’m going to be backstage as a stylist helping out the designers 🙂
Sooooo… onto the point of this post and from now until Wednesday I will be shining the spotlight on each of these ‘new designers’, they are all new to this blog apart from (Sef Farrugia and Samantha Muscat who are also participating and who I have already interviewed here and here).
Today we shine the spotlight on Jeff Francalanza
When did you first start to get interested in fashion design?

At the age of 11 I was cutting and searching through fashion magazines – I developed at a tender age as a model in various contests and fashion shows. I describe myself as a very creative person with an outgoing personality.
When did you actually start?
I started designing and sewing various garments around four years ago. Not only garments, I also did handbags/jewellery and original pieces .

Tell us something about the collection you have designed for fashion week?

The collection that i created for the New Designers – MFW 2013 is made up of a set of six different looks, each of them having an original feminine touch, using various materials and items such as fur, feathers, chains, expensive fabric and a lot of bling bling . all hand-sewn by myself onto the garments. It’s a mini collection but a lot of work and very interesting to see.
Any photos from any previous work/collections?

Here it is.
It was a collection made from gold/silver & black pure satin. This short dress was a hit for the audience and I loved it.

Which is your all-time favourite piece that you have created?

From the collection of gold/silver and black I did a very simply dress but the making of it it’s a bit strange, the dress have 4 panels of pure satin and each panel have 2 meters, that means this dress is made of 8 meters all around. I love very simple clothes and designs but with a different look.

From where do you draw on for inspiration and are there are any other designers that inspire you?

I inspire myself from nothing, if I see a cushion or a piece of art or a back of a car I will explore my mind and create a full collection. The most things I love are precious stones, expensive fabric, huge gems, strange materials, and all things or fabric that catch light. The most fashion designer that I inspire most is  Alexsander Mcqueen he was the best his design are printed in my mind, that bespoke British tailoring was amazing and he won British Designer of the Year for 4 times. When a heard in  the afternoon of 11 February 2010 that he dead I was shocked. From there the designs changed a little bit . And started to study the Zuhair Murad designs he is an amazing designer.
