Body Shape Post : The Hourglass

It was recently pointed out to me that I neglect hourglass
bodies shamefully on my blog and the person had a point…it’s not intentional
neglect …purely accidental. A good defense is that surely the world’s most desired
body shape doesn’t need help dressing. But I always say that even those blessed
by the body gods can distort and enhance so I can’t really use that argument now
can I?
So let’s give the hourglass some love and attention. Being
an hourglass means that your body is generally perfectly proportioned, the
width of your shoulders is about the same as that of your hips, an ample bust
and rounded hips and bums are usually part of the package deal as is a small
defined waist. Think Monica Bellucci, Kate Winslet, Selma Hayek and Scarlet Johansson.

So how would an hourglass enhance?

What we always want to achieve is highlighting of the best
features and minimizing attention to the worst ones, with the hourglass this
gets trickier since there are no better and worse areas. What we want to ensure
therefore is that all areas are properly defined and nothing gets swamped.
  • The worst thing an hourglass can do is wear large oversized
    clothing
, as cool as these look on a lanky lass, they’ll make an hourglass look
    twice the size.
  • The best thing an hourglass can do is define the waist,
clear distinction must be made between the bust and waist areas…the narrowest part
of the stomach which should be the waistline should ALWAYS be defined. This
can be achieved by wearing clothes that cinch in at the waist or by simply wearing a belt.

Bodycon dresses, knee length skirts, figure hugging clothes,
tailored blazers are an hourglass’s best friends. You might have figured out by
now that an hourglass therefore looks best in a more ‘dressed-up’ look and yes
that is somewhat of a reality. Unfortunately, things like baggy jeans, baggy sweatshirts,
and loose fitting tops are never going to lend much of a helping hand!
However,
this does not mean that all casual wear is forbidden, a-line dresses worn with
a belt will look great on this body shape, wrap-over style dresses are another
good option. In the case of jeans, flared jeans will work best on your shape, try and get a pair with good quality, structured denim that doesn’t slouch
at the bum. Drainpipes and skinny jeans won’t work very well as they’ll distort the balance in your body and your bum and shoulders will appear wider.
Hope this has been helpful and I do apologise for the past neglect, I realise that even the blessed ones need some help after all!

    hi caroline!

i loved – and hated – this post at the same time! don't get me wrong, pls. i hated it in a good way 😛 i hated it because it reminded me of what i should be wearing! as a person who is more or less 'blessed' with an hourglass figure despite it being not the most perfect of ones, i find that the clothes i should be wearing for my shape are just 'too sexy'. most of the days, i don't want to be seen as a living, walking, talking betty boop or jessica rabbit. it's good to feel sexy in one's clothes, but i feel it needn't be overtly so … i guess that's just me! definitely agree with you on the cinched waist approach, but i'm more of a skater / a-line dress kind of girl and wouldn't touch a body-con dress with a barge pole!

hahaha no probs ..i know what u mean but I did say a-line dresses are a great casual option 🙂 skater dressers work well too especially on thinner hourglass shapes and the under 40s 🙂
