Brand Spotlight : Carmen The Rock Musical – Meetup with Tezara aka Carmen

If you’ve missed all the hype surrounding Carmen The Rock Musical which is being staged this weekend at The Catholic Institute then continue reading this post to find out more.

The Timeless Tale of a fight for love, brought back to life in 21st Century New York. This is a very very short synopsis of our original musical Carmen. Based on George Bizet’s Opera – this musical tells the story of how Carmen (Tezara Camilleri) finds herself in between two lovers. Ryder (Samuel Mamo) and Pierce (Andrew Barberi) battle it out to try and win over Carmen’s heart. Who gets the girl? Who succumbs to the madness of true love? Who gets caught in the fire of emotions? This same fire, will burn on through song, dance, and LIVE rock music, with a strong all-singing, all-dancing cast of 30 people who will be belting out tunes from Queen, U2, Pink Floyd and Guns ‘n’ Roses amongst others.

Original Scriptwriter and Director: Lucienne Camilleri Producer: Stefania Grech Logistics: Nigel Vella Choreographers: Samantha Corrieri Dela, Lucienne CamilleriVocal Arrangements: Pamela Bezzina Vocal Coach: Claire McCartin, Stefania Grech Visual Designer: James Camilleri Band Leader: Edward Grech

I’m going to watch it tomorrow and I feel particularly eager for two reasons, first off the main title role is being played by one of my il-klikka girls Tezara Eve Camilleri, secondly me and Marisa Grima helped style another main character Isabella played by Chrissy Warrington
Since it’s happening this weekend and all, I decided to interview Tezara and see whether she’s a bucket of nerves since today is actually the day before the first night. I was also curious to see how she feels he role of Carmen differs from the role she plays in il-Klikka; since rehearsals started a few months back, it can’t have been easy switching between different roles and her real life for the past few months.

In her own words

Tomorrow/Tonight
sees the opening night of the musical Carmen in which you play the main part..Are
you nervous?
Exhausted more like
it! 😛 but in a good way. Things have finally come together; the lights are
great and the band is fantastic and  the casts’ wonderful voices are
really completing it all. I’m going to be super sad when this comes to an end.
I’ve spent most of my time throughout the last few months with these people; I
can’t believe it all comes to an end in a few days!! 🙁
If I can be
completely honest – I’m petrified of my colleagues – they’re coming to watch
the show on Friday and they’re obviously going to see somebody completely
different to the person they meet at the office. And by different I don’t mean
from the bubbly Tez to a quiet Tez – I mean from a bubbly Tez to a Sexual
Carmen hahaha. We’ll see the comments Monday morning!
Is this your first time playing the lead on
stage?
No No – It’s the
first time I’m playing the title of the musical though hehehe. Thankfully I’ve
been blessed with a handful of good opportunities which gave me the chance to
experiment with different roles. Mind you, I have always been cast in similar
roles; I’m always the little mischievous one! Never the quiet or innocent one or
the damsel in distress!
The play is made up of a cast of both
experienced actors and younger actors and actresses right?
Yep we’re quite a
mix actually. We all come from different back rounds; half of us are students,
the other half are full time workers – you can only imagine the battle of “whose
life is the most exhausting” hahahaha. I would say that the thing that binds us
is our love for the stage. It’s lovely that some of the younger ones actually
said that they feel privileged to be working with some of the older cast. I’m
personally thrilled to be working with certain people; it’s an honour to stand
on stage with them 🙂
Tell us something about your character in
the play
She’s the kind of
woman who feeds on passion – I wouldn’t say she feeds on attention because she doesn’t particularly seek it, it just comes to her you know? She walks past and absent mindedly makes men’s head turn. I mean, she’s aware of her sexuality of
course but she very rarely goes up to a man herself – it’s more like they
approach her and then she acts on it impulsively if they tickle her fancy.
By day she works in
an office and by night in a bar as a waitress. She has this ongoing flingy
thing with the bar singer Ryder – they’ve been friends a long time and get
together every now and then. Nothing serious. Then she meets her boss at the
office; he’s smart and sophisticated and handsome – apart from being a
successful business man – and that obviously tickles her fancy too so she moves
off Ryder and moves onto Pierce (the Boss). She’s then somehow tied between
them both – better yet actually – they are both tied and bound to her and want
her. She kind of wants them both but doesn’t want either of them at the same
time – you know? God this is tough to explain haha! She’s not looking for her
soul mate – this isn’t a story about finding true love – far from it, it’s a
story about feeling something passionate, impulsively and acting on it.
Readers of this blog are used
to seeing you on TV as Julia in il-Klikka, how does Carmen’s character differ?
It does and it doesn’t – Julia is bubbly whereas Carmen isn’t. Julia is married, whereas
Carmen isn’t  Julia has an element of innocence and naivety and Carmen has
anything but that. Julia can’t help but fall for certain guys; she’s led to
them and there’s something about them that makes her want to know more – even
if she knows it’s wrong. Carmen’s frame of mind is different – it’s not an “I shouldn’t be doing it but I want to do it anyways” it an “I wanna do it – I’m
gonna do it – end of
”. Carmen hasn’t got much interest in what her conscience
tells her; Ju does because above all she’s got a good heart and she cares for
people and doesn’t want to see anyone hurt. She’s not selfish (even if she may
come off that way sometimes) – I’m not saying Carmen is, I’m saying that Carmen
just doesn’t care – she’s completely aloof.
I use facial
expressions quite a bit in my acting so that’s definetely something you’ll find in
both characters.

Tell us something about Carmen’s fashion style.
What can we expect to see?
Lots and lots of red! And
leather, and high HIGH heels and red and more red 😛 we needed the red as it’s
her signature colour and the entire musical’s. It is the colour of passion –
passion in the positive and in the negative. It is also the colour of Blood… hint
