In today’s interview post we meet a truly creative Dutch jewellery designer Maureen Vorswijk – she has created the brand MAUKE V which has some fascinating pieces. She has also designed a particularly interesting piece of jewellery called the Treasure Bracelet which is a lovely harmony of classical and edgy design. Meet Mauke below.
Who are you and what is your brand about?
My brand is dedicated to women all over the world who appreciate timeless handcrafted Haute-Couture Jewelry with an edgy twist. I mainly work with 925 sterling silver as a material of choice or a mixture of different kind of materials in one piece. Mixing materials makes designing and crafting more lively and gives me a lot of joy too. I want women to feel sexy, beautiful, unique and confident whenever they wear my pieces.
From where does your inspiration and creativity stem?
Inspiration comes from anywhere – it could be a beautiful shape, words, the weather or experiences from my childhood. Creativity is in my genes, my mother is a very creative person. She is a trained seamstress who graduated from the Rotterdamse Snijschool. As a little girl I saw my mother drawing patterns and sewing beautiful dresses and suits, I was always surrounded by beautiful fabrics but also fascinated by her love for jewellery. These memories still inspire me throughout my designing process.
How did you think up the idea for the treasure bracelets? Tell us more about these bracelets
I just wanted to design a cute, stylish, statement bracelet. A bracelet which will make women possessive the moment it catches their eyes – they know that when they wear it others will admire it. It is also a bracelet that men would love to buy for their numero uno and can´t wait to see her eyes when she opens the box. The bracelets are available in brass or sterling silver with or without tiny little hand selected glass beads in 4 different colours. The bracelet is also available in 14k gold upon request. I have enjoyed designing and making this collection and I will soon add some new variations to the collection.
Favourite jewellery trend?
My favourite trendy pieces are ear cuffs, especially the real edgy ones. This is a trend you have to be familiar with – you see it on the street, tv and everywhere else, I am a designer who doesn’t care so much about trends and what’s in or out but have to admit I love ear cuffs.
Least favourite jewellery trend?
I am not a fan of jewellery with skulls at all.
Trend predictions for 2016?
I can’t really tell, and there is a reason for that. Following trends and reading fashion/jewelry magazines has always blocked my creativity and it also confuses me. I have taught myself not to focus on trends and to stay away as much as I can from magazines and Fashion programs on TV.
Future plans?
I hope that next year I can catch up with my lingerie line which is still in development. I have designed a denim bra collection in 2012 and I am determined to add more items to that collection. Designing lingerie is another passion of mine but creating jewellery is where my focus lies for now.
