Simply put, Gaetano made me a very happy bunny yesterday. Last year I wrote that whilst I liked Gaetano’s show, I felt that it needed to be cleaned up a little bit, some of the ‘extras’ needed to be done away with and a more streamlined version needed to be presented. I feel that that is exactly what he did. Yesterday’s show presented what we’ve come to expect from Gaetano but in a more polished format.
I like to listen to different people’s opinions after a show and one of the only negative comments I heard was that this collection was quite similar to his previous work and that no new ground has been broken. This is somewhat true but one must also remember that this is really only the designer’s second full collection. Before breaking new ground you must first have mastered your core subject, there is no sense in exploring 101 different options and leaving them all halfway done. I felt this collection showed the designer’s maturity as a designer, that he is learning to refine his ideas. Now maybe he will explore new ground in collections to come – who knows, we will have to wait and see.
Now onto the clothes – there are a really lot of beautiful numbers, some are not completely my style, we know I’m not really the full-embellishment sort of girl but there were a number that I just want to wear and wear and oh – they really did excite me. The collection is titled DIVAS – Gaetano is greatly inspired by music and female artists such as Mariah Carey, Beyonce etc. Each dress represented a different song infact. My favourites were the red jumpsuit with flared pants, the gold bodysuit – something simple but so effective and the white ball gown. I also loved the hair and makeup looks – great job Marlene Vassallo and Matthew & Rodrick Castillo.
Great work Gaetano and I’m already looking forward to seeing what’s next.
