Is brunch my favourite meal? I haven’t decided yet, I still love the idea of going out for dinner way too much but the hubby is pretty sold on brunch so it has become something we frequently do together. We decided to try out brunch at Phoenicia Hotel for 2 reasons. Firstly, I attended one of their parties recently and they told me they have this awesome brunch on Saturdays, secondly, I had a preview at Anchovy who invited me over for their staff brunch provided by Phoenicia.
I wanted to write about it and take pictures so I was there before it even opened (Kurt gets very annoyed taking photos of buffet counters after people have messed them up, there are times when he threatens to refuse..so we went early). Brunch is served in the grand Phoenix cafe – gorgeous, gorgeous place that you normally expect to see in places like Paris and Vienna. There’s also an outdoor terrace but I fell in love with the indoor decor.
The brunch system works like this
- Buffet Counter with everything from bread, granola to hot smoked salmon, ham and cheese
- A hot dish from the a-la-carte menu cooked to order
- Desert
- Drinks if you want (I did)
I started my brunch with a glass of prosecco follow by a bloody mary, I love this drink with brunch, the combination of flavours works so well. I then moved on to way too much food from the counter. I was especially hooked on the hot smoked salmon served with tartare sauce. I’m always surprised when I fall in love with a salmon dish, normally I ‘eat’ salmon, I don’t ‘love and attack’ salmon but this was so tantalising. Hubby did well too, he practically tasted everything I think including two bowls of granola and dried fruits.
As hot dishes, he chose a savoury crepe with asparagus and ham and I had lasagne – so so good, I even managed to stuff it all down somehow.
I was so full by now and should have said no to dessert but there was a brownie on the menu and Caroline can’t say no to brownies.
