When I first heard about wheatgrass juices, I wasn’t too excited – the bright green colour didn’t inspire wild dreams of tantalising my taste buds. About a year ago though, a friend of mine brought some fresh wheatgrass along to a girls’ weekend trip, every morning, without fail, she proceeded to make and drink this juice. I was intrigued – this is a girl who although she is into healthy lifestyle concepts, it has never been in an obsessive way – she convinced me to give it a go. The most easily obtained form of wheatgrass for me was in organic powder format from Holland & Barrets. I know there are people in Malta who import fresh wheatgrass and you can buy some from different restaurants and bars but I wanted to get started.
Over a year later and it’s become a morning ritual for me, every morning, before popping anything else into my mouth, before setting off to the gym, I throw a heaped teaspoon of this wheatgrass powder into a glass of water and gulp it down. In terms of nutritional benefits, the claim is that 28 grams of fresh wheatgrass juice is the same as eating over a kg of leafy greens. Wheatgrass is young wheat that been cut and juiced at its most nutrient-rich stage of life. Follow this link for a very well compiled list of 50 reasons to drink wheatgrass.
The food item in my breakfast picturese is approx 100g greek yoghurt and dried prunes (approx. 150 kcals) – a PLAN H breakfast and one of my absolute favourites. I love the creaminess of greek yoghurt and when combined with the sweetness of the dried prunes – the result is a big winner.
