The beauty of The Xara Palace Relais & Chateaux lies not in its grand resort feel or ultra-modern tech appliances but in its charm and historic value, in its feeling of sophistication.
Upon entering the hotel, your first impression is that it is truly a palace and truly lives up to both its name and hype; this grand building with never-ending ceilings dressed in rich furnishings. Each room is different, offering a different experience, each room is decorated with antiques and each room has a brilliant marble bathroom. The view in some of the rooms looks out from the bastions onto a green part of Malta, this time my view looked out onto the lovely courtyard in Mdina. My room was a duplex which means I had a little living room in which we enjoyed dinner and an hour of relaxation the next morning. We also had a really pretty window seat.
The hotel, like Mdina itself, is quiet, it was pouring with rain outside but no sound filtered in through those thick walls.
Breakfast is another charmer, on the top floor, in a room overlooking the bastions, there was a wonderful selection of cold cuts and pastries along with some Maltese specialities like pastizzi.
